I’m Gavin McNee of GVN Construction, and restoration work is something I genuinely enjoy. There’s real satisfaction in taking a building that’s been neglected or damaged and bringing it back to how it should look.

I’ve spent 15 years working on everything from routine repointing on council houses in Whitburn to careful lime mortar restoration on listed buildings in Linlithgow. I treat every job with the same care, but I’m especially particular about restoration work. You only get one chance to do it right, and a botched repair on an old building can cause more damage than doing nothing at all.

Chimney Restoration and Repair

Chimneys take a hammering in Scottish weather. They’re exposed on all sides, they deal with thermal expansion and contraction from the fire below, and they’re often the last part of a building to be properly maintained. I carry out all chimney repair and restoration work including:

Crack Stitching and Structural Repairs

Cracks in brickwork range from entirely cosmetic to genuinely serious. I can tell the difference. After 15 years, you get an eye for it. Structural cracks, the kind that indicate movement or subsidence, need to be crack-stitched with stainless steel ties bedded into the mortar courses. This stabilises the crack and prevents further movement without requiring the wall to be demolished and rebuilt.

I carry out crack stitching throughout West Lothian, and I work closely with structural engineers where needed to make sure any structural repair is done to the right specification.



Insurance and Storm Damage Restoration

Storms cause real damage to brickwork across West Lothian. I handle insurance brickwork repairs, storm damage repairs, and vehicle impact wall repairs. If you need to make an insurance claim, I can provide full photographic documentation, a written scope of works, and a proper invoice for the repair. I’ve dealt with plenty of insurance jobs and know what loss adjusters and surveyors need to see.



Brick Cleaning and Colour Matching

Sometimes a building just needs a clean. Years of algae, moss, pollution, and general grime can make perfectly good brickwork look terrible. I carry out brick cleaning using appropriate methods for the type of brick, and I can also do brick tinting and colour matching where sections of brickwork have been repaired and need to blend in with the original.
